How to Reupholster a chair

Getting rid of some furniture just because the fabric has ripped on some places is not the right choice, especially if you really like that piece of furniture. Constantly buying new furniture and replacing the old one can be a very expensive thing, that’s why we have decided to create this article about reupholstering furniture. In case you don’t know what reupholstering means and what this process represents, then stick around and we will explain everything to you. Reupholstering a piece of furniture such as a chair means that you take off the top layer of the fabric and replace it with new fresh one to make it look new.

This is actually a very efficient way to save your old furniture. Of course, there are cases when reupholstering won’t solve your problem and you really need new furniture, but if only the fabric on top is damaged, then you can save it by reupholstering it. This isn’t an easy job and you will need to have patience and some knowledge before you try to do it on your own. We suggest you take your chair to a professional if you really care about it, but if not and you want to experiment, you can try it out yourself.

Removing the old fabric

The first step is to remove the old fabric from your piece of furniture and to do this you also need few tips. You don’t want to just start ripping off the old fabric because you can actually damage the chair itself and you won’t be able to use it anymore. You have to remove it carefully and follow the pattern because later on, you will use that same exact pattern with the new fabric. To make everything easier for yourself we suggest that you mark the pieces with letters or words, so you later know how to put it together. If you just cut out the pieces and you don’t mark them, you will get lost and you won’t be able to put the new fabric on.

Same Pattern New Fabric

As mentioned before, you should have marked them with letters, so you know which piece goes where. If you have done that, all you need to do is create the same pattern and size with the new fabric. A tip from professional try and find a fabric that is similar to the one previously used because that way you can get the best results. Of course, changing up the color of the fabric is possible because it won’t affect the end result.

Put together the pieces

Once you have all the right patterns, all that is left to do is put those pieces back together. This will be the most difficult part of reupholstering, but if you try hard enough you can make it work. When you are done, you will have a chair that looks completely new.
