East or west home is best.

This post is a Madaraka day collaboration with my friend Avia of DIY love Kenya. You can check out her post on her blog where she did an awesome makeover project.

I discovered her blog a few weeks ago and it was like spotting land after being lost in the sea for months. Not that I know what that feels like but I’m sure it’s close. She also does lots of DIY projects. We had a little date after that and it was nice to talk about stuff that not many people get, like how limited the spray paints variety locally is and how we can’t seem to find washi tape and where to get supplies for cheap.

Anyway, we had this Idea to do a collabo post and with Madaraka day already here, we decided to do a Kenya.ish themed post.

DIY Placemat wall art*

DIY Placemat wall art*

wall art When in doubt use three pieces.

I had seen some of the offers at the opening of Garden city mall and got excited over the power tools on offer at game. They had jig saws, grinders and drills going for 2200 kes, *Jaw drop! I wanted to get a jig saw so I went to check them out on Friday evening and Lo and behold, the saws were sold out! I couldn’t believe it.

I asked one attendant where the Black and Decker jigsaws on offer were and he told me that they were probably all bought by some heavy buying Indian Shoppers who were clearing shelves. I was a bit pissed but after thoroughly checking through the shelves to be sure I bought a Ryobi handline jigsaw instead.

Anyway, see this beautiful trio of laser cut art above the bed, those are actually placemats that I got from the same store. Here is what they looked like before.

…Because everyone loves free decor gems.

I had a funny experience the other day.  As you know, I’m planning on opening a new decor shop in the coming future,  I made the announcement in our secret mailing group and the response was very positive. Thank guys.

So anyway as part of my due diligence  I have been asking a lot of decor shop owners and attendants which products have most demand and what gaps in the market needed to be filled. One time talking with this lovely lady I ask her if she would advice me to open a shop that purely stocked decor items. She looked at me squarely and said,Continue reading

DIY coffee table makeover

Little tweaks big changes.

This old guy has gone through so much in his life. The evidence of this long serving life is reflected by his rugged surface with all kind of bruises. He said a prayer and I heard him. He looks pretty good now but this wasn’t always the case.

Here is what this table looked like before

DIY storage boxes-jewelry on jewelry boxes

Shoe boxes, earrings and crepe paper! who knew?!

I believe storage boxes are important for two reasons, one; they provide an out of sight place to store all those pesky little items that clutter your space, and two If they’re pretty enough they can double up as beautiful decor items.

The last time I did a storage solution post was this simple laundry baskets and some of the comments I got there assured me that I wasn’t the only one with a storage problem.

Here’s all you need to know for this simple project…

The right books for your shelves*

The right books for your shelves*

pinecone shelf- books for bockcase decor

This goes for your coffee table books too. In case you’re wondering..

You already know that I’m no expert interior designer, nor am I an ex- librarian so all my self bestowed qualifications to lecture on books and shelves comes from my keen eye on Pinterest. Like really, pinterest is the absolute best guide for just about anything to do with home decor. At least for me it is.

So anyway, I am working on a book case project, 80% for decor, and a little bit for functionality, and I want to share this project with you as it unfolds. I have been all over wall art projects lately but that isn’t about to stop soon.

I find that I post more about pretty stuff over the functional stuff, like these baskets for potted plants, but I’m working on a better balance. Functional projects take more time and energy but hey, I’m up for the challenge.

Um, the bookcase.. let’s break this down into bite sized portions,

5 tips for picking the right books for your shelves

This turned out better than I Imagined.

If I could take a minute to explain where I have been all this time, this would turn into an annoying rant about my job and how it has taken over my life. But this blog isn’t about playing victim, it’s about grabbing stuff all around and creating prettier stuff, yes? Like these lovely wall panels painted with string.

Ok, so lets talk about today’s wall art piece and why I’m so excited about it, everything I used I have had for months, many of them, and it’s a shame I didn’t think of this sooner. The inspiration behind this was the knitted fringe wall art pieces that I have come to love, coupled with an equal longing for a leather art piece. Put together, this was the result, better than I expected and you won’t believe how simple this process was. Continue reading

Pulled string art - finished wall panels

How to decorate a large wall.

I had a wall that was covered in crayon doodles and it was badly in need of some growing up. I needed to do something to give it a breath of life so I settled on wall panels.

Wall panels  are a great way to decorate an expansive wall. They can be made from wood and covered with whatever covering you desire. You can use wallpaper, interesting fabric, crayon, or paint.

Of course these panels didn’t always look like this, they were pretty ordinary.

copper cap toe shoes - after

This isn’t turning into a fashion blog, I promise.

That said, I couldn’t resist sharing this mega shoe transformation. This pair of shoes was begging for a make over. If there is such a thing as having too many black shoes then I guess we found a cure!

This is a pretty simple DIY project, as easy as tape , paint, and voila! But as always, to appreciate the transformation you need to have a look at the before pic.

Art with character!

I’m not very handy with a paint brush unless we are talking about an abstract art project and managed expectations. I say managed expectations because it´s easy to start out a project with a Picasso image in mind and not quite hit the bar which is totally fine because the journey towards the goal is just as fun. This happened to me as I tried to come up with a cool Moroccan lantern diy last time.

This time round, this project was a breeze.
