Inspiration for your decor colour palette

Forget that green and orange combo

Nothing seems more daunting once you’ve decided to put some decorating effort into your living space than not knowing where to start. Right? It doesn’t get any easier when you go online seeking guidance and all you find is jargon on the colour wheel and tales of analogous colours and their cousin complementary colours. All this makes a seemingly simple task look like rocket science.

Out of despair, the only sane thing to do, save from throwing colour everywhere hoping something sticks, is seeking professional guidance. Kenya isn’t short of interior designers. They’re everywhere. They’re talented, very. The only issue I have with them is that they seem to have one rule which they follow with their lives; Paint everything Green and orange! Seriously! This seems to be the only colour palette permissible in Kenya and quite frankly it’s grown old.

I had previously shared a simple way to pick your wall colour and in this post I take you step by step through the method I used to pick my colour scheme right from the start.Continue reading

DIY Banquette

This banquette was almost thrown out.

We’ve had this banquette bench for years and it’s gotten its fair share of wear and tear.  But we’ve gotten even more use out of it. Having a banquette in your dining is worth the investment. You get more seating out of it and it just breaks up the familiarity of most dining rooms.

Mr banquette here was beat up out of shape as you can see in the picture below and was on the verge of getting thrown out. Can you believe the transformation? Reminds me of my first Chair makeover.

Interior design kenya headboard

Finally…

This DIY headboard project has been on my mind for over a year. It’s taken a really long time for me to actually focus long enough to make it. The last time I worked with thumbtucks on an art project I really liked the outcome so this time I knew the nail trim detail was a must on my headboard project, but it wasn’t easy I tell you.

home decor kenya Calabash art

East or west home is best.

This post is a Madaraka day collaboration with my friend Avia of DIY love Kenya. You can check out her post on her blog where she did an awesome makeover project.

I discovered her blog a few weeks ago and it was like spotting land after being lost in the sea for months. Not that I know what that feels like but I’m sure it’s close. She also does lots of DIY projects. We had a little date after that and it was nice to talk about stuff that not many people get, like how limited the spray paints variety locally is and how we can’t seem to find washi tape and where to get supplies for cheap.

Anyway, we had this Idea to do a collabo post and with Madaraka day already here, we decided to do a Kenya.ish themed post.

DIY Placemat wall art*

DIY Placemat wall art*

wall art When in doubt use three pieces.

I had seen some of the offers at the opening of Garden city mall and got excited over the power tools on offer at game. They had jig saws, grinders and drills going for 2200 kes, *Jaw drop! I wanted to get a jig saw so I went to check them out on Friday evening and Lo and behold, the saws were sold out! I couldn’t believe it.

I asked one attendant where the Black and Decker jigsaws on offer were and he told me that they were probably all bought by some heavy buying Indian Shoppers who were clearing shelves. I was a bit pissed but after thoroughly checking through the shelves to be sure I bought a Ryobi handline jigsaw instead.

Anyway, see this beautiful trio of laser cut art above the bed, those are actually placemats that I got from the same store. Here is what they looked like before.

DIY coffee table makeover

Little tweaks big changes.

This old guy has gone through so much in his life. The evidence of this long serving life is reflected by his rugged surface with all kind of bruises. He said a prayer and I heard him. He looks pretty good now but this wasn’t always the case.

DIY storage boxes-jewelry on jewelry boxes

Shoe boxes, earrings and crepe paper! who knew?!

I believe storage boxes are important for two reasons, one; they provide an out of sight place to store all those pesky little items that clutter your space, and two If they’re pretty enough they can double up as beautiful decor items.

The last time I did a storage solution post was this simple laundry baskets and some of the comments I got there assured me that I wasn’t the only one with a storage problem.

Here’s all you need to know for this simple project…
